FOOD ALLERGIES IN DOGS
By: Michelle Lonergan
Food Allergies in dogs and cats are common because most dogs eat the same food day in and day out. Consistently feeding the same ingredient can cause toxicity and may eventually be rejected by your dog or cat. The most common allergens are grains with wheat, corn and soy being at the top of the list. Therefore, the top three should be absent in your pet's food and should be moderately present in their treats. Chicken and Beef are the most common meat allergens, but only because they are over fed, as they are the most common meat sources used in pet food. If your pet has already developed an allergy and you are feeding Duck (for example), try rotating with Pheasant, Salmon, Bison or Pork to prevent toxicity from occurring with the Duck. If your pet does not have allergies, prevent them with regular rotation of meat. Most food lines have several meat varieties for the purpose of rotation. Your pet will love the variety!
